Meet the Mentor – Welcoming Avishek Roy

We welcome Avishek Roy onboard Darter Photography’s team of photography mentors. Avishek Roy is a successful wildlife photographer and entrepreneur in the field of photography, whose images have been recognized in various competitions and exhibitions. His photography draws from knowledge gained through the various tours to wildlife habitats across the country. He’ll be conducting Photography Workshops and Wildlife Photography Tours with Darter. Here’s a short tete-a-tete with him about his photography journey, peppered with some wonderful wildlife moments captured through Avishek’s lens.

Welcome to the team! Tell us about your photography journey.
Before diving full time into photography, I was a marketing professional in a reputed multi-national company in Bangalore. I was however always passionate about photography, pursuing the learning of the art and I strongly believed that this passion would soon become a big part of my life. After almost a decade and a half of marketing experience, I decided to take the road off the beaten path. Since then I have been conducting workshops, and photography tours. I enjoy mostly clicking wildlife and have greatly enjoyed my trips to various wildlife reserve forests in the country. Travel is a passion, forests in particular, and photography, an even bigger one.

What excites you about photography?
The way millions of pixels come together in a harmony to form and tell a story. That’s the most fascinating bit. Also, with my love for wildlife photography, I love the whole experience of adventure, anticipation and excitement that each trip to a wildlife location brings.

What been your most memorable experience in the wild?
Seeing the black panther lazying on the high up branches in the forests of Kabini, Nagarholey. It had been spotted in the beautiful Kabini forests just a month or so back and was extremely shy when we first spotted the cat. The whole search that afternoon just to spot the very elusive cat, and then finally seeing it will remain forever etched in my mind.

As a mentor, how does your approach help photography enthusiasts?
I have been conducting workshops for over a year now and I have realised that the best part of a workshop is the personal attention I have been able to provide to each and every participant for improving their photography skills. I intend to continue the same as a mentor for Darter.
